The staffer for the Kentucky Republican senator claimed to the police that he did not recognize his attacker. He had many wounds that needed surgical attention. Records show that on Saturday, a staffer for U.S. Senator Rand Paul was stabbed by a man who had only been out of federal prison for 24 hours.

Glynn Neal, a 42-year-old resident of Southeast D.C. was arrested and charged with the felony offense of assault with intent to murder. According to the court documents, he is being held without bond. Mr. Neal, who has been in federal prison since his 2011 conviction for pandering and kidnapping threats, was released on Friday.

Mr. Neal’s attorney, who was identified in court documents, was unavailable for comment. An unnamed staff member informed police he didn’t recognize the attacker; he was not named in charging documents or by Mr. Paul’s office.

Mr. Neal is accused of jumping out from behind a wall in the 1300 block of H Street NE and stabbing the victim as he walked with a friend after leaving a Mexican restaurant. The officials said Mr. Neal did not communicate with or make any demands upon the victim.

The knife, blood spatter, and bloodstained clothing were discovered by Metropolitan Police officers a block away from the scene of the attack.

A laceration to the victim’s left ear, a puncture wound to the skull that likely caused a brain bleed, a wound to the abdomen, and a punctured lung were all mentioned as critical injuries requiring surgery. Authorities claim they have video of the stabbing and that a cell phone left behind by Mr. Neal positively identifies him as the perpetrator.
