James met Levon Helm, a member of Ronnie Hawkins’ band, after relocating to Toronto. They hit it off and James was able to use their friendship to get into the Toronto music scene. So as not to draw the attention of the U.S. military officials, he was using the alias Ricky James Matthews at the time. Let’s dig deep into Rick James Cause Of Death.
When James was younger, he created a soul/rock band called the Mynah Birds and temporarily recorded with Columbia Records’ Canadian branch. James got to meet his musical idols, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder when the band went to Detroit to record with Motown Records. James was encouraged by Wonder to go by “Rick James” instead of his full name.
When Motown found out in 1966 that James was wanted by the Navy as a fugitive, they stopped releasing his music until he resolved his legal issues. When he was finally caught, he was sent to the Portsmouth Naval Prison for five months of hard work.
After getting out of jail, he got a job at Motown as a songwriter and producer for groups including The Spinners and The Miracles. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met and worked with even more famous bands including Stephen Stills, Jim Morrison, and Salt’N’Pepper.
Who Was Rick James?
The late American singer-songwriter-musician-and-record producer Rick James was a versatile talent in the music industry.

Legal filings filed immediately after Rick’s death reveal that his estate was only worth $250,000 upon his passing. Rick was known for his extravagant spending habits. Coke, which Rick notoriously spent $7,000 a week on in the 1990s, was “a hell of a drug,” in his later words.
More than a million dollars went toward settling a lawsuit with a woman who had accused him of abuse. Rick James died in the little Burbank, California apartment where he had been living.
