Rideshare Driver Carjacked at Gunpoint; Suspects Arrested After Chase

Two people were arrested after an armed carjacking, what seemed to be a joyride, and a short police chase. The victim was left shaken.

Wednesday night at 10 p.m., the whole thing was over in the Wesley Heights neighborhood in west Charlotte.

Officers said that the CMPD’s Real Time Crime Center told them about the stolen Mazda 6. They tried to stop the car near Uptown, but it wouldn’t stop, so they started chasing it.

During the chase, police say the car went off the road and hit a drainage ditch at the intersection of Wesley Village Road and Wesley Green Way. Near the area is a neighborhood of townhomes.

Mekayla Rodgers, 19, and Lonnie McConico, 18, tried to get away from the crash by running, but they were caught by K-9s and police.

Wednesday night around 10 p.m., a Channel 9 crew saw about a dozen CMPD cars and a crime scene taped off area on Wesley Village Road between Freedom Drive and Tuckaseegee Road.

People sent the video to Channel 9 of the CMPD helicopter flying overhead. There were still pieces of the crash left on Thursday morning.

‘I ran’

All of this started early on Wednesday. Nosakhere Reed told Jonathan Lowe of Channel 9 that his car was stolen at gunpoint while he was driving for Uber around 3 a.m. and picking up a passenger off of West Sugar Creek Road.

Reed said, “I see a guy come around the back of another truck I was parked next to.” “He was like, ‘Yo, give me everything, and you can have the chain.’

Reed says that the suspect pointed a gun at his face that had a blue laser.

“I gave him all of that,” Reed said. “He said, ‘Run before I shoot you, before I kill you,’ he said, ‘Run, run,’ he had the gun pointed at me, so I ran.”

Reed says that the suspect followed him until he could get away.

The tweet below verifies the news:

He didn’t lose his life, but he did lose his car. The crash destroyed his brand-new car, which he had just bought a few months before.

“All that is going down the drain, because someone’s kids want to like stick someone up or rob someone and things like that, and all that stuff comes back on them,” Reed said.

Reed said he doesn’t plan to drive for Uber again. He is now looking for a new way to make money.

The two suspects, Rodgers and McConico, are facing several charges, such as avoiding arrest, resisting a public officer, and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
