As severe weather threatens much of Minnesota, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. The watch zone covers central and northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, encompassing areas such as the northern Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Brainerd, the Iron Range, and Duluth, as well as parts of western Lake Superior.
The watch, labeled as Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 554, warns of widespread large hail events and isolated very large hail events up to 3 inches in diameter, along with scattered damaging wind gusts reaching 70 mph. Additionally, the possibility of a tornado or two is mentioned.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and prepared for rapidly developing thunderstorms this afternoon. The storms are expected to track southeastward across the watch area, bringing potential hazards of large hail and damaging winds.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center advises the public to closely monitor the latest radar for storms on the MPR weather page. The watch area extends approximately 75 statute miles north and south of a line stretching from 40 miles northwest of Brainerd, MN, to 15 miles south southeast of Ironwood, MI.
