After a shooting at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma on Monday, the city’s police chief announced that one person had been killed and another was in jail. According to Chief Sid Porter’s statement to the media, the suspect and the victim “are acquainted through a domestic situation.”
Student victim, 20, and the suspect’s wife, also a student, were leaving the humanities building when the suspect confronted them and opened fire, according to authorities. Porter stated that campus patrol officers responded to a call about a shooting and located the perpetrator.
The police said in a statement that witnesses had recognized the gunman and that he had “gun into a backpack” following the shooting. When challenged by police, the suspect reportedly “got down on his knees, raised his hands and stated he surrendered”
According to public records, the suspect is currently being held in the Oklahoma County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. It’s not apparent if he’s represented by an attorney. Victim could not be located by police. The community college east of Oklahoma City had a “fantastic job” responding to the situation, according to Porter.
He mentioned an active shooter drill that took place on campus over the last several weeks. According to its website, Rose State College is a public, two-year institution. It has over 13,000 students and over 60 different degree options. “We are currently experiencing an active shooter situation on campus,” Rose State College said earlier on Twitter.
