According to a press release issued by the authorities, a man was apprehended and charged with murder after a shooting at an educational programme in Des Moines, Iowa, that targeted at-risk youth and resulted in the deaths of two students and left the program’s founder with serious injuries.
According to a news release issued by the Des Moines Police Department, at 12:53 p.m. on Monday, police and fire personnel responded to a report of a shooting at 455 SW 5th Street, which is the location of the non-profit organisation known as Starts Right Here.
They were able to locate the victims of the shooting, and they were taken to hospitals. The identities of those who were killed were not made public.
According to an updated statement released by the police, Preston Walls, 18, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and participation in a criminal gang.
According to the most recent press release, “Walls and both deceased victims are known gang members, belonging to opposing gangs, and evidence indicates that these crimes were committed as a result of an ongoing gang dispute.” The Des Moines Police Department did not provide any additional details that would outline these claims.
According to the police, Walls removed a GPS ankle monitor that was ordered by the court approximately 16 minutes before the shooting.
CNN has not been able to confirm or deny whether or not Walls has hired legal representation at this time.
Will Holmes, a.k.a. “Will Keeps,” is an R&B hip hop artist and the president of the Starts Right Here programme in Des Moines. The police were unable to identify the injured person, but Mayor Frank Cownie of Des Moines said it was Will Holmes. According to the police, he was in critical condition.
According to the statement released by the police, the shooting took place after the suspect, who was armed with a 9mm handgun and an extended ammunition magazine, “entered into a common area where all three victims were located.”
Holmes “attempted to escort Walls out of the area.” Walls was not cooperative. Walls disengaged from Holmes, drew his handgun, and began firing shots at the two adolescents who had been attacked. Holmes, who was standing nearby at the time, was also hit by the gunfire. The news statement states that Walls “then departed the scene on foot” after the incident.
Approximately twenty minutes after the shooting, officers made a traffic stop approximately two miles away, according to statements made by Police Sergeant Paul Parizek during a news conference. The stop was made after the officers received a description of a vehicle that was associated with the shooting.
According to Parizek, two people remained in the vehicle while the third person exited it and fled. According to him, the police located the culprit with the assistance of a tracking dog.
The local police department reports discovering a 9mm handgun in the area. According to the press release, the ammo magazine of the handgun had a capacity of 31 rounds but only contained three of them at the time.
