Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s Family Background

After WWII, the Tsarnaev family was forced to flee from Chechnya to Kyrgyzstan. Anzor and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva are Chechen and Avar, respectively. The couple has two sons: Tamerlan, born in the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic on October 21, 1986, and Dzhokhar, born in Kyrgyzstan on July 22, 1993.

The parents have two daughters. Because they had never lived in Chechnya, other Chechen Americans in the neighborhood did not consider the American branch of the family genuinely Chechen.

Tsarnaev and his brother grew up in Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan. In 2001, the family moved to Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia. Dzhokhar and his parents visited the US on a 90-day tourist visa in April 2002. Anzor Tsarnaev sought sanctuary, fearing Chechen retribution.

Tsarnaev arrived in the U.S. two years after being left with his uncle Ruslan in Kyrgyzstan. The parents petitioned for “derivative asylum status” for their four children after receiving asylum in the U.S. They settled on Norfolk Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cambridge resident Tsarnaev died at 410 Norfolk Street.

For 10 years, the family “was in constant transition”.Anzor and Zubeidat Tsarnaev got welfare. The father was a backyard mechanic, and the mother was a cosmetologist until she was fired for refusing to work at a men-only salon. The family received permanent residency in March 2007.
