Teenager Killed and Another Pistol-whipped at Unity Park in Stockton

Stockton police are looking into a shooting on Wednesday afternoon that killed one teen and sent another to the hospital.

Just after 3 p.m., police were called to Unity Park, which is near George W. Bush Elementary School and across the street from Cesar Chavez High School, because someone had shot someone.

When police arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital right away, but his injuries caused him to die there. A 16-year-old boy was also found near the park. The police said he had been pistol-whipped.

Officer Andres Morado said that the 16-year-old boy is getting care for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Crime Scene Tape Didn’t Surprise the Homeowner

Melinda Meza, a spokesperson for the Stockton Unified School District, said that both of the victims were students at the nearby high school.

Authorities said that they don’t know anything about a reason or a suspect at this time. Investigations are still going on.

By 4:30 p.m., there were at least 13 bright police cars on Jayden Way near Unity Park. Crime scene tape was put around the park to keep neighborhood kids from going there. As police looked for signs, a police helicopter flew around the area.

The tweet below confirms the news:

Students from Cesar Chavez High School, which is less than a mile from Unity Park, passed by the scene on their way home from school. Some of them asked cops for more information.

A cop told a neighborhood resident who was riding his bike that he couldn’t go through the area, so he had to take a different route.

The homeowner said that seeing the crime scene tape didn’t surprise him.

“It’s Stockton,” he told her.

Meza says that after the killing, the high school was put on lockdown and students had to wait to leave.

“There will be counselors, social workers, and mental health clinicians at Chavez all week,” she said.

Eight months earlier, a student and another person were hurt in the same park when they were stabbed.

Officer David Scott said, “That is very scary, especially since it happened in broad daylight near schools.” “It’s important to us that kids feel safe on their way to and from school. Extra patrols will be added to the area to give people a feeling of safety.
