This week, two teens were found dead at their rural Tennessee school, likely from a drug accident. A high school student was charged with murder.
Authorities said Thursday afternoon that during the incident at Fayette-Ware High School in Somerville, a town with less than 3,500 people about 50 miles northeast of Memphis, the student facing charges was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Fayette County District Attorney Mark Davidson stated that the girl who has been charged faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of possession of a controlled substance. The Memphis Commercial Appeal, says that all of the charges have been brought in juvenile court.
Fayette County Public Schools said in a statement on Wednesday that all three teens were in their junior year at the high school. One was 16 and the other two were 17.
The school said that the event happened outside of the school, but it didn’t say where.
Just Before the End of the School Year
The sheriff’s office told WRGE Memphis that they found out about the event at 4:40 p.m., which was only a few hours before the school’s graduation.
Chief Deputy Ray Garcia told the outlet that cops went to the school because someone said that two people “didn’t seem to be breathing.”
The teen who made it out alive now has a stable state.
USA TODAY heard Thursday from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation that it is helping the sheriff’s office with the death case.
USA TODAY tried to get in touch with the police or the district on Thursday morning, but neither could be reached right away.

Superintendent Dr. Versie R. Hamlett said in the release, “We want to send our thoughts and prayers to the families of the young women who died.” “This has thrown our family for a loop.”

Hamlett said that grief counseling is being given at every school in the county.
At 5 p.m. Thursday, there will be a balloon release vigil at the high school.
