When he went to court on Saturday, a 12-year-old boy who was accused of killing a “warm and loving” 60-year-old man smiled.
Marcia Grant, 60, died on Wednesday evening after she was run over by a car outside her home in Sheffield. Emergency services were called at 7.10 pm and the foster carer was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy was taken into custody and charged on Saturday morning. He was suspected of killing someone and having a knife.
The child, who can’t be named because of the law, went to Sheffield Youth Court and was charged with killing the grandmother and having a sharp object.
During the 30-minute hearing, the child stood in the glass-fronted dock with two security officers on either side of him. He wore a dark blue jumper over a light blue shirt with an open neck and blue pants.
The boy was seen smiling and moving his hands around. When asked to confirm his identity, he only said “Yeah.”
The boy was put in a secure residential place and told to go to Sheffield Crown Court on April 11. This was done under the supervision of the Youth Justice Board.
Alan Kelleher, chairman of the bench of magistrates, told the court that “only remanding you in secure accommodation would be appropriate” to protect the public, “bearing in mind the serious nature of the offenses”.
On Friday, Mrs. Grant was described by her family as “the pillar of her community”.
Early Saturday morning, the police cordon around the semi-detached house was taken down.
The mother-of-two has yet to be formally identified, but her family described her as “a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a pillar of her community”.
They added: “Her loss has already sent shockwaves through all who knew her or was lucky enough to be included in her orbit.
“At this time, we ask for privacy while more questions are being asked and the family tries to deal with this huge loss.”
One neighbor who didn’t want to be named told The Telegraph that Mrs. Grant’s death was “a total surprise.”
Describing Mrs. Grant, he said: “Every Halloween we would knock round with the children. She was always happy to see them and gave them treats.”

A Beautiful Soul Inside and Out
“A beautiful soul inside and out” was how Mrs. Grant was described by her friends on Saturday.
Michelle Faulkner said that she was “one of the best foster parents you could ever hope to meet.”
Jackie Hector wrote on Facebook, “I’m heartbroken to hear the such sad news. She was beautiful on the outside and on the inside, and her laugh was contagious.”
Mohamed Fayzeh said: “I had the chance to work with Marcia, so I know how nice and wonderful she was. A big blow to her family, her friends, and the city as a whole.”

Flowers were left in rows in front of the social worker’s home on Hemper Lane in Greenhill.
On one card, Mrs. Grant was called “a kind woman with a beautiful heart and smile.”
South Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bowell said, “This will be a very hard time for the families of those involved in this incident.”
