The Mother Accused of Kidnapping Her South Elgin Daughter in 2017 is in Kane County Jail on $10k Bail

The woman from Wheaton who is accused of taking her daughter from South Elgin in 2017 has been brought back to Kane County and is being held on $10,000 bail.

Heather Unbehaun is accused of taking her daughter, Kayla Unbehaun when she was 9 years old. Heather Unbehaun had visitation rights, but she did not have control of Kayla. Kayla was found safe in North Carolina last weekend, and she has been given back to her father.

Heather Unbehaun went to the Kane County jail on Wednesday afternoon to turn herself in. On Thursday morning, she went to court for a bond hearing.

In 2017, she was charged with taking a child without permission. Kane County Judge Julia Yetter set her bail at $10,000, which means she must pay a $1,000 bond to get out of jail. As of Thursday afternoon, jail records showed that she was still being held.

If Unbehaun is released, she will have to wear a GPS monitor and can’t go within 1,000 feet of the father of her child’s house. She also can’t leave Illinois without the court’s approval.

Court records show that she can’t talk to anyone on an order of protection that her father got on Wednesday.

The tweet below explains the situation:

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office says that a worker at Plato’s Closet used clothing store in Asheville, North Carolina, called the cops after she remembered seeing Kayla’s story on an episode of the Netflix show “Unsolved Mysteries.”

South Elgin cops made sure that the girl and her mother were who they said they were. Police say that Kayla was then put in safe custody until her father could come get her.

The (Elgin) Courier News stated in 2018 that Kayla’s father, Ryan Iskerka, dated Heather Unbehaun for five years. Kayla is the only child of Iskerka and Unbehaun. He hadn’t seen his daughter since July 4, 2017. That was until Monday.
