When Tony Gwynn died on June 16, he was one of the best baseball players and people of all time. Even though it’s been more than a week, Gwynn’s death is still affecting baseball fans, especially those who use smokeless or chewed tobacco.

Gwynn was only 54 years old when he died after a hard fight with parotid (mouth) cancer. Even though many things could have caused his cancer, Gwynn was always sure that his habit of chewing tobacco, which he kept up even after he stopped playing baseball, was to blame.
Back in 2010, Gwynn told Bill Center of U-T San Diego that his original diagnosis was wrong and that chew was to blame. “I haven’t talked to the doctors about that yet, but I think it has something to do with dipping,” Gwynn said.

Gwynn’s Family Settles Suit With Tobacco Company
The family of baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn settled a wrongful death lawsuit with tobacco company U.S. Smokeless Tobacco in 2019 for an undisclosed amount. Gwynn died of salivary gland cancer in 2014, and his family contended that his heavy use of smokeless tobacco contributed to his death.
Major League Baseball banned the use of smokeless tobacco in stadiums as part of a collective bargaining agreement in 2016, and several cities had already banned it prior to that. The settlement was reached just before the trial was set to begin.
