The Barstow Police Department said it was looking into a video that showed an officer hitting a man with a baton while he was on the ground. The man, who was fighting arrest, was hit even though he was already on the ground.
In the video, which was shown on Fox 11, a cop swings the baton as a man moves away and then falls to the ground. Once the man is on the ground, it looks like the cop hits him three more times with his baton.
In a Facebook post, the Police Department said, “We know that a resident recorded a part of this event on video.” Police said they had a copy of the film and would look into it to see if the officer’s use of force was legal and in line with policy.
At about 4 p.m., an officer in the 1200 block of East Main Street saw Gary Christian, who police said “was wanted for an outstanding felony, no bail probation violation warrant.”

The Officer Tried to Arrest Christian
Police said that the officer tried to arrest Christian, but he “refused to do what the officer told him to do and beat the officer up.” Police said that the officer then tried to use his Taser, but it didn’t work.
“Christian then hit the officer again, which made the officer pull out his baton,” cops said. “When the officer tried to arrest Christian, he hit him with his baton.”
Police say that when more officers came, they took Christian into custody.
Melissa Navarrete, who took the video, told Fox 11 that she and her friend hadn’t seen a Taser being used and that Christian “wasn’t resisting.”
Navarrete told the source, “The guy had his hands up and was moving backward like he wasn’t trying to fight the cop.” “He’s not trying to fight back at all. He’s just moving around, and the cop keeps swinging at him.”
Christian, who is 43 years old, was taken to the hospital and treated for small cuts and bruises on his right leg, cops said. He was taken into custody because he was accused of resisting arrest and had a criminal warrant out for him.
