Violence Strikes Cleveland 1 Killed, 13 Injured in Three Separate Shootings

After three different shootings left one person dead and 13 others injured in Cleveland in a single night, Mayor Justin Bibb criticized Ohio’s Republican lawmakers for the state’s permitless carry statute.

Ohio became the 23rd state to allow anyone over the age of 21 to carry a concealed firearm without a permit last year, and the city’s Democratic mayor blamed the law for the early Sunday morning gun carnage in a statement posted online.

According to local police and media, three distinct shooting events occurred across the city in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to cleveland.com, three males were injured in the initial incident and sent to the hospital. Police in Cleveland state that shortly afterward, nine individuals were shot when a shooter opened fire on the throng in the trendy Warehouse District.

According to Fox 8 Cleveland, the third attack killed one and sent another to the hospital. Newsweek contacted Bibb and the Cleveland Police Department via email for comment. Cleveland Police reported to local media that three guys were shot numerous times in the 2500 block of W. 6th Street in the Tremont district.

Around two hours later, Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond told reporters that a shooter “started shooting at a crowd of people” notwithstanding the presence of law enforcement.

The Warehouse District in Cleveland is a popular area with many restaurants and nightclubs, and it was there that the mass shooting took place. “We have officers assigned here at that particular time, as patrons were coming out at different nightclubs,” he said.

“We had two officers actually in their cars, their marked cars, right the corner there of W. St. Clair and W. 6th. Marked cars, officers in uniform, their light bars and lights are going.” According to Drummond, the suspect managed to run and is still at large, but all they know about him is that he was a black male with a “gold grill” in his mouth.

Seven men and two women, ages 23 to 38, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, according to Drummond during the press conference, which the department also streamed live on its Facebook page. According to local media, more than 30 individuals have been shot in Cleveland this summer. That’s just in one week. According to cleveland.com, 17 individuals were shot and injured over the prior weekend.

Bibb has placed blame on state Republicans for the increase in gun violence in Cleveland, claiming that mayors are unable to adopt municipal gun-reform measures due to the state’s permitless carry statute.

“We continue to see an uptick in shootings across our city ever since Republican lawmakers passed Senate Bill 215 last year allowing permitless carry,” Bibb said.

“It’s important we recognize this and hold these lawmakers accountable for passing dangerous gun laws in our state. As a result, mayors cannot pass one piece of legislation aimed at gun reform. Unfortunately, we likely will continue to see incidents like this occur unless change is made at the Statehouse.”
