Wake County Deputy Shooter Escapes Virginia Jail

ABC11 says that one of the guys charged with murder in the death of Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy Ned Byrd has gotten out of jail.

On Monday morning, the Prince Edward County, Virginia, Sheriff’s Office reported on Facebook that two prisoners had gotten out of the Piedmont Regional Jail.

ABC11’s partner in getting the news says that one of the people who got away is Alder Alfonso Marin Sotelo, who is 26 years old.

Byrd’s body was found on August 11 in a country area near a gas station on Auburn Knightdale and Battle Bridge roads. He had been shot more than once. His dog, Sasha, was still in the unmarked SUV when he was shot, but he was still alive.

Marin Sotelo and his brother Arturo Marin Sotelo were both charged with murder in the death of Byrd. The two were on the run for a few days before they were caught near Winston-Salem.

The News & Observer has talked to the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, the Piedmont Regional Jail, and the United States Marshal’s Service about Marin Sotelo’s escape. So far, no one has replied.
