The government of Washington state said on Tuesday that it had bought a three-year supply of the abortion pill mifepristone. This comes as a judge in Texas is considering a ban on the sale of the drug everywhere.
A government statement said that the state’s Democratic governor told the Department of Corrections, which is licensed as a pharmacy, to buy the medicine last month.
It also said that the whole shipment was sent on March 31.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, could soon order the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to rethink its 22-year-old approval of a pill used in the most common form of abortion in the U.S. or revoke the approval outright.
“A patient and their doctor, not a judge in Texas, should decide about health care,” said Washington Governor Jay Inslee in a tweet. He also said that the purchase made sure that all patients in his state would have “continued access.”
After the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal, legal battles over abortion rights have gotten worse in the United States.
