The president’s personal attorneys said they discovered classified documents in two separate places and promptly informed the National Archives and Records Administration.
The first word of the finding of secret materials in the office that Joe Biden utilized from mid-2017 until the start of his 2020 campaign surfaced early this week. At Biden’s Delaware residence, more was discovered and publicized by Biden’s personal lawyer some days later.
Garland announced Hur’s appointment just hours after the story surfaced, praising his “long and distinguished career as a prosecutor.”
Biden’s home and private office will be searched by a special counsel as they investigate federal materials.
Garland stated, “His nomination highlights for the public the Department’s commitment to both independence and responsibility in particularly sensitive areas, and to making decisions unambiguously informed solely by the facts and the law.”
Currently a litigation partner at a legal firm in Washington, D.C., Hur issued a statement promising a “quick and thorough” review conducted with “fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment.”
Key portions of the department’s probe from January 6 are also being looked into by a separate special prosecutor who is looking into whether or not classified documents and presidential records were improperly handled at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
In response, Republican lawmakers want to know when the Justice Department first learned of the existence of the sensitive materials found in Biden’s baggage, citing the apparent difference in treatment between the Trump probe and this one.
The chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican Jim Jordan of Ohio, and Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana wrote to Garland on Friday to request “any records and conversations referring or connected to the appointment” of Hur as special counsel. When Robert Hur Was Younger, He Worked As A Clerk For The Supreme Court
Following his graduation from Stanford Law School in 2001, Hur began his legal career as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski and later for Chief Justice William Rehnquist, as stated by the Justice Department.
Since then, he has worked under current FBI Director Christopher Wray, another Trump appointee who was previously the director of the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice. According to the DOJ, his work there included appellate matters, cases involving counterterrorism, corporate fraud, and other areas.
In addition to his work for the government, Hur was a litigator for King & Spalding, a global legal company, in Washington, DC, specializing in government investigations. After those two years, he returned to the Department of Justice in 2007 as an assistant U.S. attorney in Maryland, where he stayed until 2014.
Hur received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for his work prosecuting a wide variety of cases, including those involving gang violence, weapons, and narcotics trafficking, as well as white-collar offenses like financial institution fraud, public corruption, and more.

Previously, he worked as a special assistant and counsel to Christopher A. Wray, the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice.
