Friday, 16 people from South America showed up at the door of a church in California. The way they got there was strange. “These people were taken from Texas to New Mexico, put on a private jet, and flown to Sacramento, where they were dumped in front of a church without any warning,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom in a statement on Saturday.

No one has said that they did it yet, but California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a separate statement, “We can confirm that these people had papers that looked like they came from the government of the State of Florida.”

Bonta said he is looking into the event. This comes at the same time that Republican governors like Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida have been calling for migrants to be sent to Democratic states like California and New York for months. “State-sanctioned kidnapping is immoral and disgusting. It is not a good choice for public policy,” Bonta said.
