The Justice Department said on Thursday that an Indiana woman suspected of stabbing a Chinese-American college student in January had been indicted on a federal hate crime count.
Billie Davis, 56, has been charged with state charges for the bus attack that occurred on January 11 and left the IU Bloomington student, 18, with injuries. According to a statement released by the Department of Justice on Thursday, a federal grand jury indicted Davis on one count of hate crime.
According to court filings in the state case, Davis is accused of telling police that she attacked the student in the skull with a folding knife because she didn’t like his “being Chinese” and because she hoped that “it would be one less person to blow up our country.“
The victim made it. Bloomington police said she was stabbed seven or so times. Police at the time stated that Davis and the student involved in the attack had never spoken to one another. When asked where she was when she was stabbed, the victim said authorities she was waiting for the bus doors to open.

As of Thursday night, Davis was not represented by an attorney, according to federal court records. There was no quick response from the public defender named as Davis’s legal counsel in state court filings.
