Colorado Man Swaps Seats With Dog to Escape DUI

A Colorado man tried to avoid a DUI charge by switching seats with his dog during a traffic stop. He is now in a tough spot.

This happened last Saturday in Springfield, a small town with only 1,300 people, according to USA Today.

Police said in a Facebook post that the unidentified guy was pulled over around 11:30 p.m. because he was going 52 mph in a 30 mph zone.

At this point, the driver “tried to switch places with his dog, who was in the passenger seat,” while the police officer “came up and watched the whole thing,” the post said. The driver “then got out of the car on the passenger side and said he wasn’t the driver.”

Police said the subject showed clear signs of being drunk, and when the officer asked if he had been drinking, he started running away. Police say that the cop was quickly caught about 20 yards from his car.

The man, who police said had two arrest warrants in nearby Pueblo, told them he got lost in Springfield while driving through neighboring towns. He was checked out at a nearby hospital and then put in jail because he had warrants for his arrest.

Police said he was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while his abilities were impaired, driving while his license was suspended, going 20–24 mph over the speed limit, and fighting arrest.

The dog was given to a friend of the driver, while the dog’s owner is still in jail. The animal in the car won’t have to spend any time in jail, which is good news.

“The dog is not being charged with anything and was only given a warning,” cops said.
