Why Will Alec Baldwin Face Involuntary Manslaughter Charges Over Rust Shooting?
When actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shoots cameraman Halyna Hutchins with a pretend gun on set, he will be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
At the time of the shooting in October 2021 on a ranch near Sante Fe, New Mexico, Mr. Baldwin was practicing a scene for the Western picture Rust.
The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, will also face charges.
Both parties’ attorneys have stated their intent to vigorously contest the charges.
The charges were revealed on Thursday by District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies of Santa Fe, who also said that they would be filed by the month’s end.
Two counts of involuntary manslaughter will be filed against “actor and producer Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed,” the statement said. “There is ample evidence, in my opinion.”
No one would escape justice under her watch, and she vowed to make sure that everyone was treated fairly.
If found guilty, anyone could spend up to 18 months in prison and pay up to $5,000 (£4,040). Prosecutors have stated that they will be tried by a jury.
Even though film director Joel Souza was shot and injured, authorities have said they won’t be pressing charges.
Prosecutors announced that David Halls, the film’s assistant director, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of the irresponsible use of a deadly weapon. The duration of his probation is six months.
Matthew Hutchins’s lawyer issued a statement in which he expressed his approval of the allegations being brought against his client. According to him, the fact that “no one is above the law” in New Mexico was a relief to the victim’s loved ones.
However, Luke Nikas, who represented Mr. Baldwin, referred to the verdict as “a tragic miscarriage of justice.”
“Mr. Baldwin had no reason to suspect there was a live bullet in the revolver — or elsewhere on the movie set,” Mr. Nikas said. “He trusted the experts he dealt with when they said the gun was empty. We will defend ourselves against these false accusations.”
