Who Is R. Kelly?
R. Kelly, whose given name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and one of the most successful R&B artists of the 1990s and early 21st century, known for his gospel-influenced vocal delivery and highly sexualized lyrics.
R. Kelly was born on January 8, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. Kelly was accused of sexual misconduct on multiple occasions throughout his career and was found guilty of sex trafficking, racketeering, and the production of child p*rnography in the 2020s.
Kelly’s mother instilled in him a strong Christian faith while he was growing up in the Chicago public housing projects. His early songs established carnality as the central focus of his music, despite the fact that his singing technique has been described as “church-trained,” and faith has been a frequent element in his lyrics.

R. Kelly, Serving 30 Years For Sex Trafficking, Sentenced To 20 Years In Federal Child P*rn Case
Disgraced Thursday in a Chicago federal courtroom, R. Kelly was given a 20-year jail term for his conviction last year on charges of child p*rnography and inducement of a juvenile. This is the second hefty sentence R. Kelly has received in the past year.
Kelly, now 56 years old, was convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking in a federal court in New York in 2021 and sentenced to 30 years in jail.
On Thursday, United States District Judge Harry D. Leinenweber ruled that 19 of the defendant’s 20-year prison sentence will be served concurrently, or at the same time, with his previous sentence. He promised that the additional year would be served immediately following the conclusion of the first sentence.
Three counts of producing child p*rnography and three counts of enticing a juvenile to participate in criminal sexual behaviour were found guilty of against Kelly in September. A new trial request was turned down only last week.

Christopher Brown, Kelly’s defense attorney, read a statement from one of his client’s victims, “Jane,” before he was sentenced.
As a result of Robert Kelly, I no longer have any sense of self-respect. I can’t thank Robert Kelly enough for destroying my hopes and aspirations. To Robert Kelly, I owe the loss of my formative years.
According to her suicide note, Kelly was “abusive and domineering.”
Jane, speaking via her lawyer, stated, “I will forever be the girl that R Kelly peed on,” referring to the infamous sex tape video that was played at his trial and showed Kelly urinating on a victim.
About 30 years after the Chicago Sun-Times first reported charges that Kelly had sexually molested minor females, he is now having his sentencing hearing. Kelly was accused of child p*rnography in 2002 and indicted on same charges in 2008, but he was ultimately exonerated.
Regardless of the claims, Kelly remains one of the most popular R&B musicians of the 1990s and 2000s, thanks to his three Grammy Award-winning singles “Bump N’ Grind,” “Ignition (Remix),” and “I Believe I Can Fly.” Over the years, he has received a total of 26 Grammy Award nominations, the most recent of which was in 2015.
Following the #MeToo movement, R. Kelly was the subject of a BuzzFeed article in 2017, and the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” premiered in January 2019. Two federal indictments came in July of 2019, and he was indicted on ten counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Cook County, Illinois, a month later.
