Immigrants Found in Trucks by X-rays

On Tuesday May 17th in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico police found five hundred thirteen migrants inside two tractor trailer trucks. These trucks were headed for the United States. Many of the immigrants were found hanging onto cargo ropes which were stretched from one end of the trailer to the other in order to not only keep them upright but also to enable them to crowd more into the trucks.

Although there were air holes punched into the tops of the trucks, the immigrants still lacked water and air and were dehydrated. According to some of the immigrants that were interviewed said they were headed to Puebla. Once they reached that destination, they would be unloaded from that truck and loaded into another truck.

These immigrants were discovered when the Chiapas used x-ray equipment on the trucks at a checkpoint. These immigrants were charged approximately seven thousand dollars each. With five hundred immigrants that added up to thirty five thousand dollars. A National Immigration Institute agent stated that this was the largest shipment of immigrants that did not make it out of Mexico in many years.

Four people who are accused of smuggling the immigrants were arrested. These four people were from Asia, South and Central America.

According to the news, by May 18th four hundred immigrants have been returned to Guatemala where they were from. The other one hundred thirteen immigrants still being held are minors, women, or from nations that do not share a border with Mexico.
