2011 Preakness Stakes Runs Today

On Saturday, May 21, 2011, the second tier of the Triple Crown will be run at the Pimilico Race Course in Baltimore, MD. Racing fans were hoping that there would be a rematch between Animal Kingdom, winner of the Kentucky Derby, and Nehro, who finished second but on Tuesday, Nehro was pulled out of the race and focus on the Belmont Stakes in June.

Even though Nehro was pulled out the Preakness, there will still be the maximum fourteen horse field with Isn’t He Perfect taking Nehro’s spot. Since 1991, this is only the third time that the Preakness has had a maximum field of fourteen horses.

At this time, Animal Kingdom is training and staying at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md, which is forty miles south of the Pimilico Race Course. His trainer is trying to decide if he is going to wait until Saturday to move Animal Kingdom to the race track for the Preakness.

His trainer, Graham Motion, was the first Maryland based trainer to win the Kentucky Derby since 2006. Graham Motion had already made a name for himself in Maryland but when Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby, he became known around the world. The win was even more bitter sweet because it came after his other horse, Toby’s Corner, entered in the Kentucky Derby was scratched days before the big race.

The last winner of the coveted Triple Crown was Affirimed in 1978. Can Animal Kingdom become the next Triple Crown winner thirty three years later? Watch the race Saturday and see if Animal Kingdom can win the Preakness.

But those are the picks for today’s Preakness. That said, I still wouldn’t mind seeing Animal Kingdom win and keep the possibility of a Triple Crown alive. I don’t believe he has it in him to win twice in a row on dirt against this kind of competition,

Animal Kingdom’s odds basically shifted a decimal point, so that a veritable afterthought at Churchill Downs opened as the 2-1 favorite at Pimlico. He doesn’t warrant that kind of prognosticating respect any more than the disrespect he got in Kentucky.
