California Counties Look To Split California Into Two States

The United States may soon move from fifty states to fifty one states if California has their way. There are thirteen counties in California that are mostly conservative that want to break away from California and make a new state. They want to call it South California. These counties have made a proposal by an elected official but before it could be done there are some major hurtles they have to clear before it could happen.

According to Republican Jeff Stone it is too hard to govern California as big as the state is and it would be beneficial to make two states. This is just one of many secession movements that date back as far as the 1850’s to make the state into two different states by splitting counties and cities.

There are thirteen counties that want to form a new state but according to the United States Constitution a new state cannot be formed unless the state Legislature and the Congress give their consent.

If the new state called South California were to be formed it would include the following counties:

  • The costal counties of San Diego and Orange
  • The sparsely populated counties of Imperial, Fresno, Kings, Inyo, Kern, Mono, Madera, Mariposa, San Bernadino, Riverside, and Tulare.

When you combine the population of all these counties, the new state would have approximately thirteen million people.
