Chevy Equinox Still Driving GM’s Sales

General Motors reported it’s July 2011 sales numbers this week, showing a nice modest sales increase of 7.6% over last July’s sales.  If you’re a headline reader like most, you would have no idea that certain GM brands sold far better than that 7.6%, while others performed horribly worse.  The ultra popular 2011 Chevy Equinox compact crossover SUV is just one example of the underlying dynamics of General Motors.

The Chevy Equinox was up a whopping 75% over last year, and continues it’s torrid sales pace since it’s inception, while the GMC Terrain registered a very respectable 67%.  Crossovers as a whole, have proven to be a winner for General Motors, and for all manufacturers.  Thanks to continuing high gas prices, the American public, while still wanting a “big” vehicle, also want “relative” fuel economy.  As fuel prices aren’t likely to drop much in the near to medium term, Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain look to continue their winning ways at the dealerships.

On the other side of the coin, the Cadillac brand took a beating, with CTS sales down 19%, SRX down 27%, and no surprise by anyone, the gas gulping Escalade was also down 27%.  While Cadillac is down a few models versus last year, it’s clear consumers are (finally) factoring in the cost of gas into the car buying decision making process.  It’s about time.

Meanwhile, the popular Chevy Silverado pickup trucks lost more ground to Ford’s F150, as sales of the Silverado decreased by 4.5%.   It’s doubtful this was a fuel economy issue though, as Ford F Series sales were up big, and even the GMC Sierra sales were up a modest 5.8%.

With the help of the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, General Motors was able to come in with the industry high gain of 7.6%, versus the average industry gain of just 0.9%.
