Avalon Park Shooting Claims Life of Off-Duty Police Officer Chicago Police Report

According to officials, an off-duty police officer was fatally shot in the Avalon Park district.

Police records state that at about 1:42 a.m., a recently-retired cop was discovered with a gunshot wound in the 8100 block of South Blackstone Avenue.

She had just left her job when she was fatally shot, according to interim police superintendent Eric Carter. According to the police, the officer had been employed for three years and was based in the fifth district.

She has been identified as Areanah Preston, 24, by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Carter requested that people remember the officer and her family in their prayers during a police debriefing on Saturday morning.

Brandon Johnson, the candidate for mayor, also issued a statement:

“This is a profound tragedy, and my heart breaks for the family of the young officer who was murdered early this morning on her way home from work. I’m outraged and devastated by this horrific violence against a public servant, and I will do everything I can to support her family and the Chicago Police Department through this traumatic time. I pray that her killer is apprehended quickly so that justice may be served.
