Canadian Airport Robbery? $15 Million Gold and Other Items Taken

On Monday, some valuable goods were stolen from Canada’s Toronto Pearson International Airport. The things that were taken were right out of a heist movie.

CNN said that the stolen items were in a box that was about 5 or 6 square feet and contained mostly gold and other high-value items worth a total of $20 million in Canadian dollars ($14.8 million in U.S. dollars).

The Guardian said it was the biggest theft in Canada’s history.

Was it a Professional Robbery?

Police wouldn’t say where the plane with the valuable goods came from, but they did say that it got there early Monday evening. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the plane’s cargo was soon taken by airport workers to a warehouse that was not part of the main building.

The tweet below confirms the news:

From there, Peel Regional Police spokesman Stephen Duivesteyn told CBC that the cargo was taken away using “illegal means,” but he didn’t say how.

Duivesteyn said that police are trying to keep an “open mind” about whether or not it was a professional robbery.

No arrests or new leads have been made public, but he said that the theft didn’t affect how the airport worked.

“We think this is a one-time thing,” Duivesteyn said. “Therefore, travelers who are worried about coming and leaving shouldn’t worry. We don’t think it’s a matter of public safety.”
