After breaking his leg at the University of Connecticut’s triumph parade for its NCAA men’s basketball winners, Senator Richard Blumenthal had surgery on Sunday. “I just got out of surgery to repair the minor fracture to my upper femur,” the Connecticut Democrat tweeted Sunday evening.
“The surgery was completely successful and the staff, docs, and everyone here at Stamford Hospital has been magnificent.” The 77-year-old senator announced his return to Washington “for votes next week” and “has begun physical rehabilitation” on Sunday night. Requests for comment from Blumenthal’s team went unanswered at first.
He tweeted late Saturday night that he had been hurt in the Hartford procession. “What can I say, I love a parade!” he exclaimed on Twitter. “I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade,” he said.

Senator Chris Murphy, another Democrat from Connecticut, stated that Blumenthal wouldn’t be stopped in his efforts to honor the team. “FYI after he broke his femur he got back up, dusted himself off, and FINISHED THE PARADE. Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever,” Murphy tweeted late Saturday.
On Sunday, Blumenthal tweeted about the NCAA men’s hockey winners from his home state, the Quinnipiac Bobcats, making it plain he had no qualms about showing his support for the team.
