Austin, TX – On Wednesday, the Austin Police Department (APD) identified the man who was shot and killed by an APD officer on July 20 in south Austin. The deceased was identified as 60-year-old James Woodrome.
The incident began when officers responded to a call in the 3600 block of Menchaca Road shortly before 5 a.m. The caller reported that a woman was banging on an apartment door, claiming that a man was chasing her.
The woman informed the police that the man, later identified as Woodrome, was pursuing her through the apartment complex while wielding a knife.

Upon arriving at the scene, Woodrome approached the officers in the parking lot of the apartment complex while they were speaking to the woman. APD stated that Woodrome was holding a knife in his hands at the time.
The officers attempted to de-escalate the situation while commanding Woodrome to drop the knife. However, he did not comply with their commands and repeatedly urged the officers to shoot and kill him, according to APD.
In an effort to subdue Woodrome, one officer deployed a department-issued stun gun, but it proved ineffective. Woodrome continued to advance toward the officers.
Despite the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife and walk backward, Woodrome persisted in moving towards them with the weapon in his hand. Another officer then deployed a department-issued stun gun for a second time, but it also failed to affect Woodrome’s actions.
Ultimately, an officer discharged his department-approved firearm toward Woodrome, causing him to fall to the ground. A knife was found on the ground next to Woodrome, and officers moved it away from him.
APD stated that the officers immediately performed life-saving measures and called for medical assistance. However, Woodrome succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene at 5:19 a.m. No other civilians or officers sustained physical injuries during the incident.
The entire encounter was captured on three officers’ body-worn cameras. The footage is expected to be released within 10 business days from the date of the incident.
APD assured that they were continuing their investigation into the shooting.
