Suspect Apprehended in Terrifying Shooting Incident Targeting Innocent Grand Rapids Mother

The culprit in the shooting death of a young mother was captured outside of Chicago on the same day her funeral was conducted in Middleville. On Friday, June 9, Grand Rapids police announced that Luis Fabian Bernal-Sosa had been apprehended in the Chicago area with the assistance of the U.S.

Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshall’s officials in Cook County, Illinois. On May 31st, at the heart of Grand Rapids, Bernal-Sosa, 27, is suspected in the shooting death of Wyoming native Leah Marie Gomez, 22.

At 3:20 p.m. on that day, officers located Gomez in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the corner of Commerce Avenue SW and Wealthy Street, suffering from several gunshot wounds. According to investigators, a child in the car walked away unscathed.

The below tweet verifies the news:

“It’s an absolute tragedy in the fact she was shot in the presence of a child,” Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said at the scene. “I’m obviously angry about it. We’re going to do everything we can to quickly bring justice for this woman.”

Winstrom concluded that the murder was likely premeditated, and the next day authorities identified Bernal-Sosa as a suspect in the case. Police in Illinois say they will keep Bernal-Sosa in jail into the night on Friday.

Ashley Reil, an aunt to Gomez, described her niece as “an amazing mother with a huge heart. Her sole purpose was being the absolute best mother to her daughter,” she said in a Facebook message to MLive. The aunt added that Gomez’s kid, who is now 21 months old, needs constant supervision.
