Police in San Antonio say a man shot a woman, and two children and one of the children killed himself at a home on the North Side.
Stephen Michael Clare, who is 50 years old, was charged with capital murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to SAPD and Bexar County Jail records.
According to a report from SAPD, Clare and a woman who was 28 years old were fighting inside a house in the 500 block of Robinhood Place when he shot her and their two children, who were 1 and 2 years old.
SAPD Chief William McManus said at the scene that police arrived around 7 p.m. and found the woman on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to her neck and lower torso.
Clare was Arrested
The people who were hurt were taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. Police said that one of the children, a girl, was later found to be dead. The name and age of the child were not made public.
At this point, we don’t know much about the woman and the other child. Clare could face more serious criminal charges depending on how the people she shot are doing.
Two 8- and 11-year-old boys were able to get out of the house. McManus said that it looked like the two boys who got away were “in good shape.”
Police said Clare ran away to where he was registered to live. About a mile away, he was arrested at a house in the 1500 block of Haskin Drive.
“It breaks my heart to see a family torn apart like this,” the chief said. “This makes me mad.”
Monday night, McManus said that he didn’t know if the family had ever been called about domestic violence before because he had just arrived at the scene. There are several civil cases involving the family, such as a petition for divorce and a suit to find out who the father is.
