Young Thug Jail: The Rapper Releasing The New Album!

Even a prison sentence and continuing legal proceedings won’t stop Young Thug from conducting business as usual. As the head of his label and collective YSL, the rapper released Business Is Business, his first piece of solo music since being charged with racketeering and other offenses. (He has released duets while incarcerated with everyone from Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa to Yeat, but those were probably already recorded.)

Young Thug wasn’t going to remain silent about his condition, as seen by the album’s cover, which showed him gazing back at the camera in a black-and-white photograph as other defendants in the case looked ahead. The 15-track album, which is executive produced by Metro Boomin, features Drake, Future, 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Yak Gotti, Lil Uzi Vert, BSlime, Lil Gotit, and Nate Ruess.

Last week, Thug teased the idea for the first time by releasing a QR code that opened a countdown clock. The following day, Gunna, one of his protégés, released a Gift & a Curse, his first album after being released from prison following an Alford plea deal on a racketeering conviction.

On “paybach,” he questioned the claims that he will testify against Thug and others in the continuing, protracted lawsuit, “Switching on my brother, are you serious?”

Since the indictment, Young Thug, also known as Jeffery Williams, has been detained for more than a year while he awaits trial. His counsel have requested bail on numerous occasions, arguing that he has not been healthy in prison, but each request has been turned down. There is currently no indication of when the trial would start; jury selection is still going on.

Why Young Thug Is In Jail?

In Atlanta, Young Thug and Gunna were taken into custody and are still there. Both rappers, who the prosecution claims are high-ranking members of the “criminal street gang” YSL, requested release on bond from a Fulton County court, but both requests were rejected—a strict and unusual action for the court to take. Judge was persuaded by prosecutors that if Young Thug and Gunna were released, they may threaten, hurt, or even murder potential witnesses who might testify against them.

Young Thug’s (born Jefferey Williams) and Gunna’s (born Sergio Kitchens) attorneys have objected to the assertion that their clients would pose a threat to witnesses and have filed petitions requesting the judge to reevaluate his ruling.

Brian Steel, Young Thug’s attorney, claimed that the prosecution’s argument for keeping Thug behind bars was “based on inaccurate, misleading, and erroneous information.” Steven Sadow, the head of Gunna’s legal team, refuted that Gunna held a “command position” within YSL and highlighted that he hasn’t been charged with any violent crimes.

Additionally, the two rappers offered to go to great measures to ensure that they wouldn’t run away from Georgia and that they couldn’t intimidate witnesses.

Young Thug promised to employ off-duty police to watch over him at home 24 hours a day, among other things, and to only permit visitors who were on a court-approved list. Gunna proposed putting up $750,000 in collateral in addition to his three personal residences and two additional that belonged to his parents. And both men consented to the monitoring of all of their electronic communications.

However, none of that has succeeded in persuading a judge to release them on bail thus far. Chris Timmons, a former prosecutor who has litigated and provided advice on numerous RICO cases in Georgia, was contacted by VICE to get a sense of whether that would change. He offered his opinion on Young Thug and Gunna’s options moving forward and the likelihood that they will be granted bond before heading to trial.
